  The Clients

The server is a usual PC running a Linux Operating System.
The only requirement this PC needs are:

•  Linux Operation System like SuSE, RedHat or Debian
•  The scanDoX scanner driver
•  An Apache Webserver with cgi-interface running
•  A Network Interface Card
•  A SCSI-Card, if you are using a SCSI-Scanner
•  A USB-Interface, if you are using a USB-Scanner
•  At least a Pentium 300.
A slower machine would do, but the calculation times are displeasing below that speed.

  Very thin clients

I have to admit, that Handhelds and PDAs are not the usual Platforms for scanner applications. But it demonstrates how powerful the network capabilities of InSANE and scanDoX are. Let me give you an example: You are somewhere, then a co-worker calls your cell phone and tells you, that the long awaited fax or letter has arrived. Instead to read to you, he can insert the documents in the scanner. You connect your PDA to the Internet and then to the web server running InSANE. There you select the desired resolution etc and then scan the document. After that you just have to press the “save scanned document as PDF”, and your browser downloads the image data as a normal PDF file on your PDA.
